Germany’s Heilbronn celebrated as European green capital 2027

Germany’s city of Heilbronn has been officially named the European Green Capital for 2027, earning one of Europe’s most respected environmental honours after years of sustained investment in sustainability and civic participation.

The title was announced during a ceremony in Vilnius, the city that currently holds the distinction, and immediately positioned Heilbronn as a leading example of how a former industrial centre can reinvent itself for a greener future.

The European Commission highlighted Heilbronn’s consistently strong performance across the award’s environmental criteria, including air quality, water management, climate adaptation, noise reduction, and circular economy practices. Much of this progress stems from the city’s Landscape Plan 2030, an integrated strategy that aligns green spaces, mobility planning, pollution control, and urban design into one long term vision for sustainable growth. The jury noted that the plan stands out for its clear goals and measurable pathways toward environmental improvement.

A key reason for Heilbronn’s success is the involvement of its residents. The city has created a wide array of citizen engagement tools, public education initiatives, and open consultations designed to involve people directly in shaping local environmental policy. It has also designated quiet areas within the city to preserve natural calm and support public wellbeing, a feature the jury singled out as a model for other European cities.

Heilbronn has committed itself to reaching climate neutrality by 2035, one of the most ambitious municipal climate targets in Germany. Local leaders say the €600,000 prize associated with the Green Capital title will be reinvested into new sustainability projects and used to accelerate this transition. The award year in 2027 will include a full programme of events, conferences, exhibitions, and community initiatives intended to share ideas and encourage environmental action across Europe.

Mayor Harry Mergel called the announcement a milestone for the city and praised residents, experts, and local organizations for shaping Heilbronn’s transformation. City officials emphasized that the award recognizes not only what Heilbronn has achieved but also the direction it intends to continue pursuing.

The achievement is especially significant given Heilbronn’s industrial heritage. Once defined by heavy manufacturing, the city has shifted toward an identity built around innovation, sustainability, and technological development. New climate groves, expanded green corridors, and partnerships across the region illustrate how environmental restoration has been paired with economic modernization.

As 2027 approaches, urban planners and environmental advocates across Europe will be watching Heilbronn closely. The city now stands as a compelling example of what can happen when long term planning, strong community engagement, and ambitious climate goals work together to reshape an urban landscape for the better.
