China is leading the global surge in offshore wind

The world’s offshore wind industry is riding a powerful surge, with total capacity reaching a staggering 80.9 gigawatts (GW)—a 15% jump from the previous year’s 70.2 GW, according to RenewableUK.

Leading the charge in this renewable revolution are China and the Netherlands, responsible for nearly two-thirds (63%) of the newly installed capacity. China alone contributed 6.9 GW, while the Netherlands added 1.7 GW, solidifying their dominance in the sector.

But this is just the beginning. The pipeline of global offshore wind projects is expanding at a record pace—rising from 1,461 to 1,555 projects in just 12 months. As offshore wind gains traction, 44 countries are now actively developing projects, with recent newcomers including Chile, Indonesia, and Malta.

The Race for Offshore Wind Supremacy

China remains the undisputed leader with an astounding 437 projects, set to generate a colossal 247 GW. The UK holds second place, boasting 123 projects with a combined capacity of 96 GW.

Hot on their heels are:

  • United States – 79 GW
  • Germany – 68 GW
  • Sweden – 55 GW

The UK is also gearing up for a major auction in 2024, with 13 offshore wind projects totaling 7.3 GW eligible to bid in the Contracts for Difference auction (Allocation Round 7).

With offshore wind expanding faster than ever and new nations entering the fray, the global energy landscape is undergoing a dramatic transformation. The question now is: who will ride the wind to the top?
